Kopila Valley Health Clinic & Mental Health and Family Support Center
Health Goes Global is honored to continue our partnership with BlinkNow in Nepal. We continue to support the Kopila Valley Clinic and Mental Health and Family Support Center in Kopila Valley to prevent the number one cause of death of young girls in Nepal, suicide.
A HEALTHY DOSE OF PREVENTION
Nestled along the dirt roads of Nepal’s most poverty-stricken villages is the Kopila Valley School and Health Clinic. Health Goes Global has partnered with the Kopila Valley Health Clinic to support preventative medical care in the rural Surkhet District of Nepal.
The Kopila Valley Health Clinic provides preventive and primary care, as well as basic health education, to the 420 students and community of Kopila Valley. Staffed by a full-time health technician, a health administrator and pharmacist, and assisted by medical professionals from the local community, the clinic provides an integrated approach to health and well-being for the underserved population of Surkhet. The community clinic combines natural holistic methods and modern Western medical treatments to help the residents and children of the area improve and maintain their quality health.
Mental Health and Family Support Center
Many of the school children and women in the community face daily battles of stress, depression or other mental health concerns. The consequences can be startling: suicide is the number one killer of girls in Nepal. In 2013 the clinic opened Surkhet’s first Mental Health and Counseling Center to address this important issue, and provide another way for women and children to reach out for help.
“We believe that every child has a right to a safe home, medical care, a quality education and love. We know that when kids get the support they deserve, they will grow up to be adults prepared to tackle the challenges of poverty and violence in our world. We’re working every day to make sure our kids get what they need to build healthy, stable lives so they can be leaders in their communities, their country, and the world.”

An Inspirational Story from the Family Development Center (fdp)
Pictured standing with her mother is a single mother of one of the students at Kopila Valley School. She had been suffering from physical and mental health problems. The family had no regular income source in the family except for the grandmother’s old age allowance from the government. She was unaware that she was eligible for a “single women's card” to receive an allowance from the government and that she could enroll in the government health insurance plan. The FDP helped her with legal documentation, access to health care resources and information, and mental health counseling. Through frequent home visits, counseling sessions, and a series of workshops related to stress management and health insurance, She was able to develop confidence and life management skills. She also received training from the Women’s Center in business planning, positive parenting skills, and budget management. She is now more adept at working and saving money. Through these efforts, her health issues were addressed and she was able to start a small business with 2 goats and a vegetable garden.
“In Kopila Valley, health and education go together like two pieces of a puzzle. After opening the school, we realized that kids wouldn’t attend regularly or be able to succeed until they were healthy and nourished – and that they wouldn’t be healthy and nourished until they came to school. That’s why we started the Kopila Valley Health Clinic in 2011. We focus primarily on preventive care, because we’ve also learned that sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference.”

Tuberculosis screening program to identify cases of active TB and stem the spread in our area.
She says:
I am very happy these days. I spend good time with my son and also feel good about myself. I feel more empowered. I am hopeful about my future and I have learned to overcome and manage stresses and anxiety and move ahead in life. I am rearing two goats now and I am planning to have more and also be financially independent. I spend time with my son and my mother is also very happy looking at me.
