Dental Health this Holiday Season

Most recently this holiday season, our co-founder Hannah Akre spent time in her community conducting dental screenings to students at risk for early childhood cavities.  As Hannah, a first-year medical student at the University of New England, continues to embrace the interprofessional philosophy of preventative medical care, she joined up with Maine Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Network, Partnership for Children’s Oral Health, and The Opportunity Alliance to perform oral health screenings and fluoride varnishes to children in rural and underserved communities.

Dental cavities are a major public health problem globally and according to the World Health Organization, are the most widespread noncommunicable disease.  Dental cavities are largely preventable through simple and cost-effective interventions, such as education on proper oral hygiene, brushing techniques and dietary advice. It is especially effective to teach children, as oral hygiene patterns are shaped in youth and can prevent complications as they grow.
